The take-off run for aerospace composites has been prolonged, but now that designers feel more comfortable with these materials, they are incorporating them into primary aerostructures – as well as into the design codes, qualification loops and other features of the necessarily safety-first aviation culture. As a result, we may be witnessing lift-off and could, given further impetus, see composites climb high.

Airbus signs research agreement with Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency

03 July 2009

European aircraft manufacturer Airbus has signed a cooperation agreement with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) on research into composite materials.

Two composites technologies already identified for evaluation are vacuum assisted resin transfer moulding (VaRTM) and non-destructive inspection (NDI). Once the first cooperation phase is successfully concluded, Airbus and JAXA intend to extend it further to other areas.

This agreement marks the first research cooperation between aircraft manufacturer Airbus and a Japanese aerospace agency.

JAXA, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, is a national research and development organisation for Japanese aerospace science and technology.

Airbus, headquartered in Toulouse, France, is an EADS company.
