Surfboard uses nano-carbon/epoxy resin system

04 June 2009

Entropy Surfboards is producing a range of custom surfboards that use Amroy Europe’s Hybtonite® resin system in order to improve durability by a factor of between two and three while retaining the flex and feel of a traditional custom board. Hybtonite is an epoxy-based system that is reinforced with Bayer MaterialScience’s Baytubes® carbon nanotubes.

The standard manufacturing method for custom surfboards is followed for the new range. A foam blank is shaped to the required profile and then layers of glass reinforcement are laminated onto the blank using the Amroy Hybtonite system.

Baytubes are agglomerates of multi -wall carbon nanotubes. Each tube consists of several graphite layers with the overall diameter being 13-16 nm (50 000 times thinner than a human hair).

Due to their high modulus of elasticity and excellent tensile strength, Bayer's Baytubes are five times stronger than steel while being a quarter of the specific weight. In addition to their strength properties, Baytubes offer excellent electrical conductivity (comparable to copper) and thermal conductivity values that are equivalent to diamonds.

Entropy Surfboards is based in Santa Monica, California, USA.
