McConaghy partners with SP on Lutra 80 yacht

29 May 2009

Composite yacht builder McConaghy Boats is currently working on the Lutra 80, a high performance carbon composite yacht designed for use in the Mediterranean. Its construction will employ SP's composite materials.

The Lutra 80 is scheduled to be launched early next year and is designed to combine racing performance with the luxury of cruising.

SP, a supplier of composite materials and technology to the marine market, has been working with McConaghy Boats of Australia since December 2008. SP, based on the Isle of Wight, UK, is currently engineering the Lutra 80, and it is also providing a package of materials which includes SE84LV and SE85 epoxy prepregs, Ampreg 22 epoxy laminating system, and Spabond 340LV adhesive.

The SE84LV prepreg will be used in the Lutra 80’s composite deck, hull and internal structure. Ampreg 22 will be used in the structural laminating and secondary bonding process of the build. Spabond 340LV, a high-strength, high sag-resistant structural adhesive, will be used on the bulkheads and furniture.

SP is the marine composite business of Gurit AG, Wattwill, Switzerland, and currently supplies the superyacht market, high-performance custom, production and workboat sectors.

McConaghy Boats has facilities in Sydney, Australia, and China.
