Premix wins award for composite HVAC component

01 May 2009

A composite blower housing for the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) industry has earned Premix Inc the 2008 Thermoset Durability Award from the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE).

Premix was singled out in the new market development category for the composite blower housing developed for Trane Residential Systems – Package Units & Air Handler Systems. Compression-moulded from Premix PREMI-GLAS® sheet moulding compound (SMC), the composite housing replaced a stamped, fabricated, sheet-metal assembly, resulting in lower cost, consolidated parts and improved air flow efficiency.

PREMI-GLAS® SMC is UL-recognised for a variety of applications. It is reported to offer the following benefits:

  • heat and dimensional stability at a wide range of temperatures;
  • creep resistance, assuring dimensional accuracy; and
  • superior mechanical properties for applications requiring high strength and durability.

Premix, based in North Kingsville, Ohio, USA, develops and manufactures thermoset composite materials and moulded components, focusing on the HVAC, electrical, transportation and construction markets.

The SPE award, which recognises advancements in thermoset materials, design, processing and applications, was presented at the SPE Thermoset Molding Conference in Madison, Wisconsin.
