Engineered Plastics orders composite pedestrian bridge from Innovative Composites

15 July 2010

Innovative Composites International Inc (ICI) has received a purchase order for a composite pedestrian bridge from Engineered Plastics Inc (EPI), a US speciality composite products manufacturer.

The pedestrian bridge is part of the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Winnetka train station, 30 km north of Chicago, Illinois.

Utilisation of Innovative Composites' StructureLite™ composite panels provide the bridge with a strength-to-weight ratio greater than steel, and offer design advantages and quick installation on site with a small work crew.

StructureLite composite panels, comprising glass reinforced polypropylene skins with a honeycomb core, are inherently corrosion-resistant, eliminating the ongoing maintenance concerns resulting from moisture, salt air and termites that pose problems for pedestrian bridges constructed in steel, wood and concrete.

"Over the last few years the demand for composite pedestrian bridges has steadily risen and our distributors have been looking for a solution,” says Ken Szekely, President of EPI, Williamsville, New York, USA. “EPI has many more pedestrian bridge orders in the pipeline following the successful completion of the project in Winnetka. Utilising ICI's StructureLite panels we can offer superior performance at competitive prices which should allow EPI to capture a significant part of the composite bridge market in North America."

In addition to pedestrian bridges, ICI’s StructureLite composite panels are suitable for mass transit, municipal facilities, parks and private property landscaping applications.

Innovative Composites International (ICI), headquartered in Toronto, Canada, is an engineering and manufacturing company currently focused in two areas: StructureLite composite panels, and Hero 451 environmentally friendly fire inhibitors and suppressants.
