  • Thermoplastic composites – recyclability and fast processing top list of benefits
The use of thermoplastics as a matrix material in fibre reinforced composites has been growing steadily, especially in automotive and aerospace applications, largely due to the materials’ recyclability and ability to be processed rapidly. They also offer improved fracture toughness over thermosets as well as the ability to be easily joined using welding techniques. We report on recent developments and new applications of thermoplastic composites.

IVW receives awards for composite innovation

06 April 2009

The Institut für Verbundwerkstoffe (IVW) GmbH won two composite innovation awards at the JEC Show in Paris, France, in March.

The IVW received the composite innovation award in the category ‘automation’ for the development of a flexible welding technique for joining 3D fibre polymer composites for the automotive industry. The award was won together with project partners KUKA, Bond Laminates, Jacob Composite, and the Department of Production Engineering and Plant Organization - FBK of the University of Kaiserslautern.

In the category ‘process’, IVW won an award for the development of a fully automated tape placement head to process continuously fibre reinforced thermoplastic tapes, operated at a six-axle articulated robot, together with project partner Airbus. The technology could be applied to aircraft consisting predominantly of carbon fibre reinforced polymers.
