Laminated thermoplastic takes on thermoset FRP
US LINER CO has launched Versitex®, a laminated thermoplastic composite sheet.
The product can be used in truck-trailers, cargo and storage containers, building and construction, recreational vehicles, automobiles, and military structures and equipment.
The company, headquartered in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, USA, claims that Versitex gives twice the impact protection of conventional fibreglass panels, as well as being lighter in weight and costing less. It is also said to be easy to install and repair, heat formable and completely recyclable.
Versitex is manufactured using a process in which nonwoven continuous glass fibres are impregnated with polypropylene and laminated to make a thin, tough bi-directional structure.
Laboratory testing found multiaxial impact strength of 10.8 ft-lbs for Versitex V4. Other mechanical properties include: tensile strength of 33.5 KSI; tensile modulus of 1.5 MSI; and tensile elongation of 2.6%.
