UK composites centre launched
THE NORTHWEST Composite Centre (NWCC) was officially
launched at the University of Manchester, UK, this month.
The £2.1 million centre will specialise in aerospace
composites design and manufacture.
The NWCC is a joint collaboration between the UK universities
of Manchester, Bolton, Lancaster and Liverpool.
“Current methods for producing composites are relatively
inefficient which makes using these materials to construct
aircraft an expensive option,” says Professor Philip
Withers, Executive Director of the NWCC. “If we can
speed up the production process, and create these materials
more cost effectively, and through lower energy usage create
a lower impact on the environment, then we have the potential
to economically produce planes which are lighter, stronger
and more fuel efficient.”
The NWCC is one of four centres in the world developing the
Quickstep composite moulding technology.
