Composite backpack frames

FIBERFORGE CORPORATION of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, USA has received an order for 20 000 military backpack frame sheets from Mystery Ranch, a producer of survival packs, assault packs and ultra-light packs for military and law enforcement agencies.

The Fiberforge frame sheet is made with unidirectional glass fibre reinforced polyethylene terephthalate (PET) blended with polyurethane (PU), and is 43% lighter than the part it replaces, which was made from polyethylene plastic, fabric and aluminium. The frame is made as a single stamped part with ribs formed into it for stiffness. The production cycle takes 70 seconds compared to the 10-12 minutes it took Mystery Range to make the original sheet.

“Not only are they [the frames] significantly lighter weight and more functional for our customers, but they are actually more cost competitive and have saved us significant labour expense,” says Dana Gleason, Founder and President of Mystery Ranch, based in Bozeman, Montana, USA.
