Ticona wins environment award

TICONA (part of Celanese Corp) has won an innovation award for its recycling concept for Celstran®+ long-fibre-reinforced thermoplastic (LFT). Celstran pellets are produced by this process for use in dashboard supports. These have been used for the first time in the VW Golf 5 and Golf 5 Plus.

The award was presented by the German Federation of Reinforced Plastics (AVK) at the 9th International AVK Conference in Essen, Germany.

Traditionally, processors regrind LFT production scrap themselves before returning it to the original production process. This can change the way the material behaves and can alter its properties.

With the Celstran recycling concept, the punching and start-up scrap is processed by a qualified recycling company. The regrind has a purity of 99.7%. It is then returned to Ticona to be combined through an optimised pultrusion process with virgin LFT material. The regrind makes up 10-20% of the material used in this process.
