Owens Corning wins EPA SmartWay award
OWENS CORNING, based in Toledo, Ohio, USA, has won a US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWay (SM) excellence award. The 24 awards acknowledge accomplishments and leadership in the EPA’s SM Transport Partnership, which seeks to reduce greenhouse gases and air pollution by developing fuel-saving and energy efficient technologies in the freight industry, such as low rolling resistance tyres and improved aerodynamics.
OC, one of only four shippers to receive the award, joined the Partnership last year and now uses 63 SmartWay partners for transport. It has promoted the programme to carriers in a variety of ways, including selection and contract processes, and recognition events. The award also recognised Owens Corning’s investment in technology to track, measure and reduce carrier waiting times at facilities and its establishment of anti-idle guidelines to minimise emissions and maximise the safety of its drivers.
“This EPA award recognises Owen Corning’s leadership in implementing shipping technologies and strategies that promote both a strong business environment and a healthy physical environment,” comments David Johns, senior vice president, chief information officer and chief supply chain officer at Owens Corning. “Not only have we developed our own ways to reduce emissions, but we’ve also encouraged others to participate.”
The initiative is a voluntary collaboration between the EPA and sectors of the freight industry and has over 450 members. By 2012, the Partnership hopes to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 33–66 million tonnes and nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 200 000 tonnes a year. It will also make an annual fuel saving of as much as 150 million barrels of oil, equivalent to removing as many as 12 million cars from the road each year.
