Bio-based resin tests the water
A BIO-BASED resin from Ashland Composite Polymers, Dublin, Ohio, USA has tested the water in two high-performance composite pleasure craft from Campion Boats.
The two boats, Chase 550 and Chase 600, were made using Ashland’s ENVIREZ® L 86300 T-25 bio-based resin in their hulls, liners and decks. The first ENVIREZ resin, ENVIREZ 1807, was formulated with soybean oil and corn-derived ethanol and entered market in 2003 in side-body panels for farm equipment.
New formulations and applications have been developed, and the ENVIREZ L 86300, which is undergoing a final evaluation for this use, is designed to provide high elongation and toughness properties that the deliver impact- and crack-resistant attributes needed in the marine industry.
“As we see it, partnering with the Ashland team to develop the two test boats, the Chase 550 and Chase 600 models, has truly helped both Ashland and Campion to fully understand the characteristics and application processes of this new bio-resin product and project forward,” says Brock Elliott, General Manager at Campion Boats.
Campion Boats of Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, also used Ashland’s LE white gel coat WG-LE-2644 and the MP-series gel coat for colours.
