Flame retardant resins help meet EU directives
GE PLASTICS of Bergen Op Zoom, the Netherlands, is launching a new range of flame-retardant Valox thermoplastic polyester resins aimed at helping electrical/electronics manufacturers and suppliers comply with regulations restricting use and disposal of hazardous substances, such as the European Union’s RoHS and WEEE directives.
Valox ENH resin is based on polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and does not contain brominated or chlorine additives. It is said to deliver better ductility and strength than other environmentally responsible flame-retardant PBT materials, and better electrical properties than standard brominated flame-retardant PBT materials. Applications for the resin include electrical connectors, relays, lamp sockets and consumer appliances.
The first product in the Valox ENH resin family is ENH4550, a 25% glass-filled grade that will be commercially available in the third quarter of 2007. ENH4550 provides flame retardance that meets the UL94 V0 standard at 0.8 mm.
