Sumitomo Bakelite buys Neopreg

THE SUMITOMO Bakelite Group has acquired Neopreg AG, Swiss manufacturer of Kinel and Neonite branded long fibre thermoset composites. Neopreg will retain its name and be integrated into Sumitomo subsidiary Vyncolit NV, which is based in Gent, Belgium, and produces mouldable composites.

The companies claim that combining Sumitomo Bakelite’s expertise and R&D capability with Neopreg’s technology will result in a wider product portfolio offering customers additional choices.

Applications for Neonite epoxy moulding compounds include high-voltage equipment, switches and contact terminals. Kinel polyimide moulding compounds are most commonly used for aerospace applications such as jet engine intakes and blades, as a result of their high-temperature performance and mechanical properties. They can also be used for automotive applications and capital goods to manufacture finished products, such as film stretch machines.

“This is an important strategic move that will add exciting new products in addition to our phenolics portfolio,” comments Henny Van Dijk, president of Vyncolit NV. “These technologies will allow us to leverage new growth opportunities in the automotive and aerospace markets as well as capital goods sector, including machinery for processing plastics.”
