Composite board aids emergency workers

A STRONG, lightweight board for use by emergency workers in moving an injured person has been produced by Austrian company Karl Niedersüss.

The spineboard is manufactured as a composite sandwich construction using the Hex-Flow® system from Hexcel Composites GmbH & Co KG based on Baypreg® polyurethane raw material from Bayer MaterialScience AG. A core of rigid polyurethane foam is covered above and below with the resin-impregnated carbon fibre fabric. On top of this is a decorative film made of poly-amide. This construction is cured in a heated mould.

The board can float because of its low density and it is also transparent to X-rays.
