Composite caravan

AUSTRALIAN COMPANY Classic RTM has launched what is believed to be the first caravan to feature a resin transfer moulded (RTM) sandwich composite drawbar and chassis that is integrated into an aerodynamic, monocoque composite body.

Liberty caravan. The Liberty 1’s aerodynamic shape, high strength and lightweight monocoque sandwich construction is said to make is one of the most fuel-efficient caravans in the world. Independent trials (with and without the caravan) over a distance of a 100 km (62 miles) were carried out by a Toyota Sahara Turbo Diesel at similar speeds and under similar road conditions. When towing the Liberty 1, the fuel consumption of the Toyota Sahara increased by less than 2%.

The Liberty 1 is also reported to be much stronger than a conventional caravan, according to Classic RTM, but this does not mean that it is more difficult to repair. The company explains that as a result of high strength and excellent impact resistance, damage to the caravan is likely to be confined to a localised area and such damage can be easily repaired (even by the owner) so there is no loss of structural integrity. The Liberty 1 is also very easy to maintain.

The use of DIAB core material in the sandwich construction results in a lightweight, high strength, maintenance-free structure but also provides high levels of thermal/acoustic insulation. With more traditional caravans, non-structural insulation has to be added to provide adequate thermal and acoustic properties.
