Self-reinforced PET launched
SELF-REINFORCED POLYETHYLENE terephthalate (PET) has been added to UK-based Aptiform’s product range.
It is said that self-reinforced PET is particularly suitable for large, low-volume parts, is easily painted and bonded and provides significant weight savings in comparison with glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) mouldings. Applications for the material are predicted to be in areas where GRP is currently used but where weight savings are advantageous such as in mass transit, specialist and construction vehicles. The company’s proprietary forming process has been developed in collaboration with industrial companies and universities to enable it to mould complex shapes from the material.
Self-reinforced plastics are said to be more easily recycled as a result of them not being contaminated with dissimilar reinforcing materials such as glass fibre. It is also claimed that they have stiffness and strength values up to five times those of traditional unreinforced plastics.
