Dry impregnation technology produces 'custom' composites
FIBROLINE OF Ecully, France, has developed a composite, FibroComp™, based on Fibroline®, its dry impregnation technology. FibroComp is a composite reinforced with extra-long fibres and finds applications in the automotive and personal protective equipment markets amongst others.
The Fibroline process uses powdered thermoplastics or thermoset resins to impregnate chopped rovings. It is said that the process can be used to impregnate porous structures such as nonwoven material, fabric and foam with all types of powdered material. The company claims that the technology can reduce production costs through the use of inexpensive raw materials and practically no energy consumption. The JEC Innovation Programme 2007 has selected the process as one of the finalists in its ‘Process’ category.
“The process we have developed allows the fibrous structure to be fully impregnated, guaranteeing perfect homogeneity,” says Laurence Caramaro, head of research and development at Fibroline. “The flexibility of the process which is just as suitable for mass production as for small series, offers a customisable solution that can meet very specific requirements.”
Applications for FibroComp in the automotive industry include boot (trunk) floors, bumper beams and door panels.
