High-flow PBT resins step up a gear

GE PLASTICS, headquartered in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, USA, is launching Valox super high flow resins, a line of glass and mineral filled polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) materials. The resins are said to help automotive manufacturers make thinner, larger parts with greater detail at lower injection pressures.

Thinner, lighter parts increase fuel efficiency. Producers will also be able to incorporate extra features with the space savings thinner parts create.

Traditional materials can cause short shots and rejects because the machines used with them cannot deliver enough pressure to completely fill the moulds. GE Plastics claims that Valox has demonstrated double the flow of existing PBT resins in spiral flow tests, which ensures complete filling of even complicated moulds. The resins reduce peak filling pressure by up to 30% over similar conventional grades and lower cycle times and system costs because more mould cavities can be filled in a single shot. Energy savings can also be made through lower melt and mould temperatures in existing tools.

Applications for the resins include power distribution boxes and high pin density connectors. They can also be used in electrical and large part applications because of their high dielectric strength and good chemical and heat resistance.
