Elise goes green
UK-BASED car maker Lotus will unveil its Eco Elise 'green' technology demonstrator at the British Motor Show in London later this month.
Hemp fabrics have been used as the main constituent in the Class A composite body panels and spoiler. The hemp is used with a polyester resin to form a hybrid composite. Lotus hopes that a fully recyclable composite resin will be viable in the near future.
Hemp fibres have also been used in the manufacture of the seats. The seats are upholstered in a biodegradable woollen fabric and sisal has been used for the carpets.
A water-based paint system which includes primer, colour coat and lacquer has been developed for spray application by hand.
The hemp hard top roof incorporates two solar panels. These contribute power to the electrical systems.
The weight saving programme for the Eco Elise has resulted in a total saving of around 32 kg (70.5 lbs) over the Elise S model, which lowers the car's fuel consumption.
