Flow provides waterjet cutting for A350 XWB

FLOW INTERNATIONAL Corporation of Kent, Washington, USA, will provide Airbus with multiple composite machine centre (CMC) abrasive waterjet and routing machine tool systems for the manufacturing of Airbus A350 Xtra Wide-Body (XWB) under a multi-million dollar contract. Installation will take place over the next 18 to 24 months.

The exact value of the contract has not been disclosed, but Airbus will use Flow’s CMC waterjet systems throughout all its plants in Europe to cut and trim wings, fuselage, wing spars, keel beam, and other parts on the A350 XWB.

The A350 XWB uses more than 60 new materials in the airframe, all chosen for their superior weight and strength properties, and Flow’s waterjets are said to lead the industry in cutting these carbon fibre materials.

Flow develops and manufactures ultra high pressure (UHP) waterjet technology for cutting and cleaning. Its UHP waterjet are used in industries including automotive, aerospace, job shop, surface preparation and food.
